Sometimes, the beauty of a space can be its function….
The Brief
This beautiful garden started as waste ground, parallel to the driveway and the lovely farmhouse property entrance, set in the Warwickshire countryside. Our mission was to create a space encapsulating a ‘show-garden’ feel where beauty slightly topped function. The intention was to create a useable space that disappeared and merged into the landscape, a feature, but not to stand out.
Our approach used reclaimed materials and many plants, which immediately coexisted with the property. The old cobbles used tied in with the farm’s rawness, and the planting echoed planting styles of the past. The cobbles created a pathway through the space, creating the framework for the plants.
We Planted over 1000 perennials and ornamental grasses, weighting on a more naturalistic approach, relying on self-seeded species to help break up any formatlity. In addition, plants like Erigeron karvinskianus were planted between the cobbles to help create a controlled but overgrown style. In Spring, the planting can be cut down using a lawnmower on a high setting, leaving the cuttings for mulch.
