About our garden design and landscaping services

Garden design that starts with listening to the land and the way you live.

Every Umber garden begins with careful observation. We take time to understand the character of your space. How the light falls, how the ground moves, what views matter and how you want to use the garden day to day. From there, we shape a design that feels natural to its setting and purposeful for your life.

As a garden designer in Warwickshire, Mark Wright brings a calm, considered approach to each project. The aim isn’t to impose a style, but to reveal what your garden can be at its best: balanced, inviting and built to mature beautifully over time. Structure, materials and planting are chosen for longevity and quiet elegance, with sustainability woven through every decision.

Whether it’s a compact courtyard or a large rural landscape, our garden design services create spaces that belong exactly where they are, and feel distinctly yours from the moment you step outside.

What Clients Say

Our garden design process

Each garden is different, so our process is tailored to you and the land. But the goal is always the same. To create an outdoor space that works beautifully in daily life and matures gracefully over the years.

Our garden design services typically include:

Site visit and consultation

We start by spending time in your garden, understanding how you use it, how it sits in the landscape, and how it could evolve. This stage is about listening, observing and exploring what’s possible.

Concept design

You’ll receive an initial concept that sets the direction for your new garden. This includes layout ideas, structure, key features and a clear design vision.

Detailed design and plans

Once the concept is agreed, we develop the full design into detailed plans ready for build. These may include planting plans, materials palettes, lighting ideas, levels and construction details.

Landscaping and build

Because Umber is both a garden design company and a landscaping team, we can carry your project from design to construction. That means continuity, clarity and craftsmanship all the way through.

Behind every Umber garden design is Mark Wright, a Warwickshire-based garden designer with a lifelong connection to nature, making and place. With a First-Class Honours degree in Design and RHS qualifications, Mark blends creative vision with a deep practical understanding of how gardens are built, planted and enjoyed over time.

Years of hands-on experience in forestry, oak framing and drystone walling shape the way he designs. That means every plan is grounded in real materials, real landscapes and real use. The result is more than how a garden looks on day one, but how it feels and functions for decades to come.

Mark believes the best garden design happens through careful attention, open collaboration and respect for the land itself. By working closely with you from the first conversation to the final details, he ensures each design is balanced, personal and quietly confident.

His vision for every project is simple: to design gardens that fit their setting naturally, support daily life beautifully and grow more meaningful with every season.

Garden design with Warwickshire roots

Our Ethos

Why work with Umber Garden Design?

You’ll find plenty of garden designers, but not all of them see your garden the way we do.

Here’s what sets Umber apart:

One designer, end to end

Mark leads every project personally. That means no handovers, no dilution and a consistent vision from first sketch to final planting.

Design grounded in craft

With hands-on experience in forestry, oak framing and drystone walling, Mark designs with build reality in mind. Instead of being purely decorative, details are structural, purposeful and made to last.

A sustainable, place-led approach

We design gardens that fit their environment, rather than fighting it. Planting is chosen for long-term resilience, local suitability and seasonal interest.

Timeless style over trends

Your garden shouldn’t date after five years. We focus on lasting structure, natural materials and planting that improves with age.

Warwickshire garden design FAQs

  • Our garden design services cover everything from the first site visit and concept ideas through to detailed design plans and planting schemes. We look at layout, levels, materials, lighting and how the space will be used, then create a design that feels natural to your home and landscape. You can choose design-only, or a full design and build package.

  • We offer both. Umber is a garden design company with in-house landscaping, so we can take your garden from design through to construction and planting. If you already have a contractor, we’re also happy to provide garden design services only and work alongside your chosen team.

  • If your garden feels disconnected, difficult to use, or you’re unsure how to bring your ideas together, working with a garden designer can make a huge difference. We help shape a clear plan that balances beauty with function, so your garden works for real life and matures well over time.

  • Yes, small gardens are some of our favourite projects. With the right structure and planting, compact spaces can feel calm, spacious and beautifully layered. If you’ve been searching for small garden designers near me, we can help you make the most of every corner without the space feeling overdesigned.

  • We’re based in Leamington Spa and provide garden design across Warwickshire and nearby areas including Warwick, Kenilworth, Stratford-upon-Avon and the Cotswolds. If you’re unsure whether we cover your location, just get in touch and we’ll happily confirm.

  • The design timeline depends on the size and complexity of your garden. A smaller garden design may take a few weeks to develop fully, while larger landscapes can take longer as we work through concept, refinement and detailed plans. We’ll outline the expected timescale after your initial consultation.

  • As involved as you’d like to be. Our process is collaborative and transparent, with clear stages and plenty of opportunity for feedback. We guide you through decisions without overwhelming you, so the finished garden feels distinctly yours.

  • Both. Some clients come to us with a blank canvas, others want to rework a tired or awkward space. Either way, our garden design starts with understanding what’s already there and what it could become, then shaping a plan that fits your life and the land.

  • Absolutely. Many of our clients want gardens that are easier to care for, more sustainable or better for biodiversity. We can design low-maintenance layouts, choose resilient planting, and create spaces that support wildlife while still feeling refined and intentional.
