Our garden design and landscaping process
Each garden comes with its own site and its own set of priorities, so our process adapts around them. The goal holds steady throughout: a garden that works beautifully now and keeps improving as it matures. A project usually runs through four stages.
Site visit and consultation
We start out in the garden itself, learning how it works today and where its potential sits. This first stage is about listening closely and building a true picture of what you want the space to become.
Concept design
We then bring you an initial concept that sets the direction, taking in structure, layout, the key features and a clear overall vision to guide both the build and the planting.
Detailed designs and plans
With the concept signed off, we work it into detailed drawings and specifications, which may take in planting plans, materials, levels, lighting and the construction detail beneath it all.
Landscaping and build
Thanks to our in-house landscaping team, we can see a project through from first sketch to final planting ourselves. That unbroken thread keeps the design intent whole, right up to the finished garden.
Every Umber garden is guided by Mark Wright, a local designer with real depth in craft and construction alongside horticulture. His design training goes hand in hand with practical experience in forestry, oak framing and drystone walling, so he designs with a proper understanding of how a garden comes together on the ground.
