Garden Observations: Amelanchier in Autumn part ii

After the wonderful red flash of colour from the Amelanchier, just like that the leaves have dropped to a bare minimum with the final few hanging on, almost like art in nature.

What I love about this moment is how the tree's form takes over. Those elegant bare stems that were hidden behind autumn's fire now provide the winter interest. With the leaves gone, they open up views deeper into the garden, perspectives that stay hidden most of the year.

You can already see next year's buds waiting on the branches. From spring blossom to summer fruit, autumn's vibrant reds and oranges that match the sunrise and sunset, and now this sculptural winter structure. The Amelanchier really does earn its keep across all four seasons.
